All
integrating members of the GTDC are the municipalities of Les Garrigues
and seven municipalities of El Segrià that once were part of Les
Garrigues. The depicted territory is located in the southern part of
Lleida area, bordering the region of Tarragona. The orography of the
territory is very steep, as it is in the Southeast of the Central Catalan
Depression and in contact with the Pre-littoral mountain range.
The economy of the region is predominantly agricultural with the cultivation
of olive trees as the most renowned product from which one of the finest
olive oils on the market is extracted. The almond tree is also commonly
grown in this area, despite its production having decreased a little.
Both types of products can be found in 90% of the Garrigues region,
whereas in the remaining 10% the production is much more diversified
given that these lands are irrigated by the Urgell Canal, thus the production
of Lucerne, sweet corn, and fruit trees is prominent. Within the primary
agricultural sector cattle raising plays as important a role as that
of the pig, ovine and bovine sectors. Nevertheless, the municipalities
of the region work continuously to enable the irrigation support system
to get to the olive tree plantations to facilitate obtaining both greater
production and profit. This new opportunity offers hope to the young
farmers enabling them to remain in the territory and make their living
out of agriculture.
Industry in the region of Garrigues is scarce, however there is a
group of municipalities, formed by Les Borges Blanques, Juneda and Arbeca
representing the enclave in the Northern part of the region where an
increase of industrial growth, although moderate, is evident. It is
for this reason, and due to the lack of industries and jobs the Garrigues
Consortium has been set up for Regional Development with the aim of
promoting the new creation and setting up of companies, as well as to
facilitate the creation of a wide range of services for the local population.
This development perspective in the industrial and services sectors
has given rise to the Proder programme (2002-2006) to finance and promote
initiatives aimed at modernizing the area as far as the industry and
services sectors are concerned, in order to offer new amusement and
leisure offers closely linked to the respect for our land's nature and
culture. |
